Description
Direct-sow in loamy, wealthy soil in overdue spring or early summer, after the specter of frost has passed. Plant seeds 1/2″ deep in raised hills 3-4′ apart. Leave 5-6′ between rows. Warm season watermelons do highest in full sun, in a temperature range of 70-95° F. Hot summer conditions will sweeten the melons; but plants will wish to be watered ceaselessly until they go to fruit. Take care of plants with care, as their vines are tender. Harvest ripe watermelons, after 80-90 days, by cutting the stem near the bottom of the fruit with gardening shears. On the lookout for an In advance Harvest? Start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost date and transplant seedlings to a sunny location, with light, porous soil, after the soil warms to about 60° F.
