Description
Devil’s Claw (Harpagophytum Procumbens) is a perennial plant with hollow, highly branched stems that may reach as much as 100 cm in length, spreading over the ground. Large, tuberous sorts of thickening are formed at the roots of the plant. All parts of the plant are covered with sticky pubescence. By the start of the rainy season, overhead shoots grow as much as 1 m long, spreading over the ground. Devil’s Claw blooms with single bright red, purple flowers that form within the axils of the leaves. The fruit of Devil’s Claw is a small box with stiff, long, branched outgrowths that have hooks bent back, which gave name of the plant. After drying, the fruit of the plant splits into two sharp, curved claws – hooks. Sharp claw-like outgrowths at the seed box are a extraordinary adaptation of the plant for distribution.
Sometimes called: Harpagophytum procumbens, Unicorn plant, Grapple plant, Wood Spider, and Elephant Tusks.
