Citrullus lanatus “Crimson Sweet” Dark green rind with light green stripes adorn this large, round fruit. These watermelon average around 25 lb. Inside is dark red, firm, with small seeds. 1-2 fruits per plant. Very sweet. Type: Annual Sun: Full Planting Depth: 1” Spacing: 4-5′ Water: Moderate Days to Maturity/Bloom: 80 days Height: 36” vining Zones: 3-9 In cool climates, watermelon seeds will have to be started indoors, but no sooner than a month before transplanting; plant three seeds per peat pot, 1/4″ deep. Provide heat to keep the soil a minimum of 80-85 degrees F. Bring to an end all but the strongest seedling as soon as true leaves appear, and transplant about a week after frost; put two or three plants in each hill with a 6-8′ space in all directions. Gardeners in warm climates will be capable of direct sow watermelons as soon as the soil temperature reaches a minimum of 75 degrees F, planting six seeds per hill with 6-8′ of space in all directions. Thin to the strongest two or three plants as soon as the seedlings appear. Watermelons will have to be planted in full sun and rich, loose soil.
