Description
Blood sorrel, often referred to as a bloody dock or red-veined dock is a striking bright green, red-veined herbaceous perennial aromatic herb (around 12-18”/30-45 cm tall). It is hardy all the way down to zone 4. One of the vital first greens to emerge in the spring and last to go in the fall. Encourage growing of new tender greens by cutting them.
Planting instructions:
Sow seeds for the sorrel plants in spring when the soil has warmed up. To ensure high germination, it is crucial to prepare seeds. For several days, the seed material is wrapped in a cloth and watered with water. The seeds will receive the necessary moisture, which will help the plants ascend in the shortest conceivable time. It is also conceivable to dilute nutrient fertilizers in water, so that the sorrel will increase immunity. This will allow you to get 100% germination. Prepare a well drained bed with well tilled soil. Keep the bed quite moist until germination and then thin the plants when they reach 2 inches (5 cm) high. Sorrel will not need numerous supplemental care, but the bed does want to be kept weeded and the plants must receive at least 1 inch (3 cm) of water per week. Sorrel can be used from late spring until fall, with management. Harvest only what you want from the plant. It is much like lettuce and greens, where You’ll cut the outer leaves and the plant will continue to produce foliage. You’ll begin to harvest when the plants are 4 to 6 inches (10-15 cm) tall. The smallest leaves are best in salads and add an acidic tang. The larger leaves are more mellow.
